NEW RESIDENTS INFORMATION DRIVER’S LICENSE If you are a new resident of the state and hold a driver’s license from another state, Texas requires you to obtain a Texas driver’s license within 30 days of establishing residency. You will need to take either a certified copy of your birth certificate or a valid out-of-state driver’s license with you. You will be required to pass both a vision test and a written examination. You will need to take a driving skills test if you do not have a current Texas or out-of-state license of if you are advancing in "class". To obtain a Texas driver’s license you must either be 18 years of age or older or you must be at least 16 and have completed a certified driver’s education program, including both classroom and "behind the wheel" segments. If you have moved to the Clear Lake area from another city within Texas, be sure to have a new Texas license issued, giving you new address. You must do this at the Department of Public Safety driver’s license office within 30 days of relocating. A Texas driver’s license must be renewed every four years. Texas drivers must have their automobiles inspected for safety every 12 months. The inspection and approval sticker can be obtained at many approved auto dealerships, service station, garages and auto service centers. The inspection sticker is valid for one year, except in the case of new cars which may have a two year sticker. A valid sticker must be displayed in the lower left-hand corner of the windshield.
VEHICLE REGISTRATION If you own a vehicle, you must register it within 30 days of establishing residency in Texas. Out-of-state vehicles may be registered for license plates at one of the following locations:
To register your vehicles, you must (1) verify your vehicle’s serial number through an auto safety inspection at an authorized auto dealership, service station, garage or auto service center; (2) take your out-of-state title when you apply and (3) pay a new resident fee, a title fee, and the cost of your license plates. This cost is based on the model and year for cars and gross weight for trucks.
